What is Organic Search
When marketing your business online, you’ll need to understand certain terms. Organic search is just one of them.
In this post, you’ll learn what an organic search is, why it is important, and how to increase your organic traffic.
What is organic search?
Before discussing what an organic search is, let’s see what a search engine is. A search engine is a system that searches the World Wide Web for keywords specified by a user in a search query.
Simply put, it is a web-based tool that helps users find information. The three most popular search engines are Google, Microsoft Bing, and Yahoo. When a user inputs a keyword or a phrase in a search engine, a list of relevant results is generated.
The result page is called the search engine results page (SERP). Some businesses pay to be on top of the search results. Others get a spot on the results page by merit. The latter is called organic search results. “Organic” implies that the spot on a SERP wasn’t paid for.
Businesses that appear on Google search implement proven strategies to rank their web pages on the result pages. When a user clicks on one of the organic search results, the web owner calls it “organic traffic”.
Although our focus is the organic traffic source, there are other traffic sources. They include:
- Direct: This refers to traffic with an unknown source. You do not know where the user found the link to your site.
- Social: This is traffic coming from social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Twitter.
- Email traffic: This refers to the number of visitors who click your link in their emails. When you engage email marketing, traffic generated from such an exercise is called email traffic.
- Paid search: This is traffic coming from a paid ad. It could be pay-per-click (PPC) or cost-per-click (CPC).
- Display traffic: This is traffic originating from a banner ad campaign. It is sometimes called CPM (cost-per- mille)
- Referral traffic: refers to people visiting your website without searching for it on a search engine. When a person clicks on your link from another site and lands on your website, tracking systems identify it as referral traffic.
Importance of organic search traffic
Organic traffic is the most targeted source of traffic. When a user searches for something on Google, organic search results are the most precise. This is because they match the user’s search intent. Websites that appear as organic search results are more likely to turn to leads.
Furthermore, organic traffic is the cheapest form of traffic. Companies spend roughly $9,000 – $30,000 per month on Google Ads. Organic traffic, on the other hand, is more or less free. The word “free” means you won’t pay to Google, although you may need to get an SEO expert.
When you stop paying for ads, traffic from the ads drops. This shows that paid ads are not a long-term digital marketing solution except you don’t mind paying for life.
Organic traffic offers long-term benefits. Although appearing on the organic search results page takes time and effort, it is worth it in the end. If done correctly, your website will become an authority in its niche, and you can reap its benefits for a long time.
Avinash Kaushik, a Google Analytics expert, stated that about 86 percent of search engine users favour organic search results over paid search results. Therefore, being on top of the organic search result pages drives more traffic to your website far more than paid ads do.
Organic ranking factors
Google and other search engines have ranking factors specific to their platform. They influence a page’s ranking on search engines. General to most search engines, these factors include:
- Site load time
- Security
- External and internal link structure
- Quality of content
- Mobile optimization (Google rates sites that are mobile-friendly above those that are not)
